Accessing the Core: Bridging the Language Gap in Content Classrooms
Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
In the international school landscape, our classrooms are vibrant, multilingual hubs. However, for many students, the complexity of Humanities, Science, and specialized subjects can feel like a locked door. How do we ensure that a student’s English proficiency doesn't cap their potential in our content areas?

This session addresses the "Access Gap" through a two-pronged approach: Structural Support and Strategic Instruction. First, we will explore a collaborative structural model where EAL specialists "push-in" to content classes and provide dedicated support time to reinforce core concepts. This shift moves away from isolated language instruction and places it directly where it's needed most: in every classroom.

Second, we will equip subject teachers with high-impact, low-prep strategies that benefit all students in a multilingual environment. We will move beyond "English-only" mindsets to embrace translanguaging, create effective dual-language supports, and leverage technology like IXL to personalize the learning journey. Join us to learn how to transform your classroom into a space where every student, regardless of their language starting point, can master your content.

Learning Outcomes:

  • The Co-Teaching Framework: Understand the structural benefits of the "Push-In" model and how content and EAL teachers can maximize their time together.
  • Translanguaging as a Tool: Learn how to strategically allow students to use their full linguistic repertoire to brainstorm, process, and clarify complex content.
  • Scaffolding without Simplifying: Discover how to design support materials and dual-language vocabulary lists that maintain high cognitive demand while providing linguistic access, that eventually phases out.
  • Tech-Enhanced Learning: Explore how to integrate platforms like IXL to provide targeted, data-driven language practice tailored to specific subject-area standards.

Fostering Academic Writing in Multilingual IB Classrooms: Pedagogical insights from longitudinal research grounded in Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST).
Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
I completed my PhD dissertation last year. It focused on L2 academic writing development among adolescent learners. I employed the Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST) as the guiding framework. The presentation that would like to share is designed for both language specialists and non-language teachers, as academic literacy development is a shared responsibility across subject areas. It connects theoretical insights from applied linguistics with practical classroom strategies that enhance students’ writing, critical thinking, and language awareness. My goal is to create an interactive space for IB educators to explore concrete, evidence-based practices that support multilingual learners’ academic writing development. Session Outcome(s) By the end of the session, teachers will: 2. Know/review reusable discourse moves (e.g., This matters because…, If…, then…, To a certain extent…) to employ in class. 3. Remember why key vocabulary and sentence structures need to be explicit in subject areas. 4. Be aware of revisiting important language patterns frequently across tasks and contexts. 5. See variability in student writing as a sign of development, not failure

From Assessment to Action: Using Skill Progressions to Drive Feedback, Goals, and Small Group Instruction
Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
In many classrooms, feedback remains general and disconnected from next instructional steps. This interactive workshop will explore how skill progressions can transform student work into actionable teaching decisions.
Participants will examine real student writing samples and practice identifying precise skill gaps using clear progressions. From there, we will develop:

- Targeted, growth-oriented feedback
- Student-friendly SMART goals
- Small group instructional plans aligned to specific needs

The session will address how feedback differs developmentally between lower and upper elementary, and how to maintain clarity while increasing rigor. This workshop will also provide recommendations for supplementary technology that can make this process easier.
Participants will leave with practical templates, sample progressions, and a replicable framework for turning assessment into intentional instruction.

From Pattern to Understanding: The Power of Numicon and manipulatives in Elementary Mathematics
Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
This session will be a “back to basics” (re)introduction to the power of mathematical manipulatives (with a focus on Numicon) in strengthening strategic thinking and deep conceptual understanding in our elementary classrooms. With the 2025 PYP Mathematics Continuum placing greater emphasis on Pattern and Function, we will explicitly connect these materials to how students notice structure, build number sense, and develop early algebraic thinking. Informed by elementary mathematics intervention and curriculum leadership experience, this session connects research, structure, and classroom reality in practical and accessible ways.Participants will explore and play with selected Low Threshold High Ceiling activities, experiencing firsthand just how impactful the right manipulatives can be. These approaches are increasingly important in supporting all learners within a wider MTSS (Multi-Tiers Systems of Support) framework and align naturally with UDL (Universal Design for Learning) principles through multiple representations and entry points.Come and join in the play, the thinking, and the joy of mathematics learning.

From Sketchbook to Portfolio: Teacher Toolkit
Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
We are two teachers that have a design and a traditional visual arts background, and that use sketchbooks as a daily tool. We collaborated closely when drafting lower secondary, IGCSE and IB DP Schemes of Work to ensure maximal alignment in building up sketchbook skills. This is an ideal way to enable students to track and visualise their progress.
This presentation aims to equip visual arts educators with practical strategies to transform the sketchbook from a passive notebook into a dynamic tool that directly feeds into IB DP portfolio and IGCSE coursework. Designed for all secondary art teachers, it addresses the challenge of guiding students toward sustained experimentation, meaningful annotation, and reflective practice.

Participants will explore structured sketchbook routines: observational drawing prompts, artist analysis templates, and layouts that can be used to organise information on the page.

Participants will leave with a ready-to-use teacher toolkit and knowledge of the advantages and ways to use a sketchbook as a routine in and outside the classroom.

Lesson study-A Co Planning Protocol for Lessons within the Whole School
Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
Lesson study is a transformative approach to professional development that is based on collaborative action research. Originating in Japanese educational practices and spread around the world after, lesson study is a process in which a small group of teachers plan one or more lessons collectively, observe each other's teaching and then come together to refine their strategies. The main aim is to improve curricular resources and teaching methodologies in order to increase the quality of student learning. At Franconian International School a pair of teachers designed a lesson for three G7 Science classes. The following competences were considered: motivating students for the act of learning, using interactive methods based on teamwork, training students to ask questions to help them solve the requirements od the task. The lesson was directly observed and analysed according to an observation grid created for this purpose. Students participated constructively with ideas and suggestions, working both individually and in teams.

Session Outcome(s)
To familiarise teachers of all grades with this approach and to encourage them to apply it to their lessons in their schools.

Maxed Out Minds: Managing Working Memory for Powerful Learning
Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
Understanding and Supporting Working Memory in Learning
Working memory is the brain’s mental workspace—the system that temporarily holds and manipulates information during thinking, problem‑solving, and learning. This workshop explores how working memory functions, why it is limited, and how cognitive overload can disrupt students’ ability to process new information and move it into long‑term memory. When working memory becomes overwhelmed, learners struggle to follow directions, complete multistep tasks, or retain new concepts, making instructional design and pacing essential to student success.
Participants will examine the relationship between attention and working memory, including how distractions, stress, and competing stimuli reduce the brain’s capacity to hold information. The session highlights how attention acts as the “gatekeeper” for learning—if attention is lost, working memory cannot engage, and long‑term storage cannot occur.
The workshop provides practical, classroom‑ready strategies to support working memory during lessons. These include chunking information, using visual anchors, modelling thinking steps, reducing unnecessary cognitive load, incorporating retrieval practice, and embedding purposeful brain breaks to reset attention. Educators will learn how to design instruction that aligns with how the brain learns best, ensuring students can process, store, and retrieve information more effectively. Participants leave with tools to create learning environments where working memory thrives and long‑term learning sticks.

Science Fair : Reimagining MYP Science from Assessment to Authentic Action
Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
This session will explore how a grade 8 science fair can be intentionally designed as an IB MYP checkpoint that builds collaboration, fosters independent thinking and supports students' engagement in open-ended experimental inquiry. Participants will examine how open-ended experiments encourage students to formulate their own research questions, make methodological decisions, collaborate meaningfully, and reflect critically on their findings. Aligned with the MYP sciences objectives and assessment criteria (B and C), the science fair is presented not as a standalone event, but as a structured learning process that develops students’ readiness for higher-level scientific investigation. The session highlights how Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills—particularly collaboration, research, critical thinking, and self-management—are explicitly taught, practiced, and assessed throughout the science fair process.

Outcomes of this session:
1. Promote independent thinking and student ownership.
2. Implement practical strategies aligned with IB-MYP criteria.
3. To foster inter-school collaboration, we will establish a shared 'Science Fair Portal'—a digital repository where students from IB schools in Germany upload two-minute video pitches. This platform facilitates student engagement and enables teachers to work collaboratively on academic exchanges .

Students Teaching Students: The Power of Peer Teaching in Language B Classes
Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
This session is focusing on student leadership in language B classes. The concept of students teach students can of course be applied to other subjects, however, the examples that will be presented in this session are from our German B DP classes. By giving students the freedom to choose their own topics and having them teach their fellow students, we help them to be more responsible for their own learning. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator than a teacher. We will show you how this method can increase the students’ motivation and willingness to study vocabulary and content; how we as teachers can foster the students’ creativity and confidence. We will provide you with ideas of how to implement this concept, how to structure the work units and how to assess them.

Study the patterns, achieve 100 % pass rate e-assessment
Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
Misunderstanding the command terms test, verify, and justify is a common issue in the MYP Mathematics eAssessment, particularly in Criterion B: Investigating Patterns. These terms are often used interchangeably by students, which leads to incomplete reasoning and loss of marks in a section that typically accounts for a significant portion of the assessment.
Drawing on experience as an eAssessment examiner, this session clarifies the distinct expectations behind these command terms and highlights common misconceptions observed in student responses. Participants will explore practical examples of generalizing patterns and simple strategies to help students move from identifying patterns to effectively testing, verifying, and justifying their conclusions.
The session aims to equip teachers with clearer interpretations of the assessment rubric and practical approaches to help students maximize success in the Investigating Patterns strand.

Outcomes:
This professional development session will strengthen teachers’ understanding of the command terms test, verify, and justify within Criterion B: Investigating Patterns in the MYP Mathematics eAssessment. By clarifying the distinct expectations behind these terms and sharing insights from examiner experience, the session will help teachers address common misconceptions that often prevent students from accessing full marks. As a result, teachers will be better equipped to guide students in moving beyond simple pattern recognition toward clear mathematical reasoning and justification. Ultimately, this will improve the quality of student responses, increase confidence in approaching pattern investigation tasks, and support stronger performance in a component of the assessment that carries significant weight. This professional development session will strengthen teachers’ understanding of the command terms test, verify, and justify within Criterion B: Investigating Patterns in the MYP Mathematics eAssessment. The Feedback Loop: Using Feedback to Navigate and Individualize Learning Support
Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
In learning support, the most powerful tool isn’t a textbook—it’s the student’s voice. This workshop moves beyond "one-size-fits-all" instruction toward a Feedback Loop that builds genuine student agency. Using lean, digital systems (Google Forms, exit tickets, and AI as a learning coach), we’ll demonstrate how to capture real-time insights to pivot your curriculum.
Through the lens of our classrooms, we will show how student feedback transformed a standard program into a responsive curriculum featuring targeted organization and summarization strategies. Learn to design a "living curriculum" where modular planning and collaborative goal-setting put students in the driver’s seat of their own success.

Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
The neuroscience of leadership in schools: Self-leadership, servant leadership, and system stability

Frank Tschan, ISD Director
Michelle Goddard, Ph.D., ISD Head of Mental Health and Well-being

Description
Educational leadership is often framed and shaped around strategy and organizational structure. However, the psychology and neurobiology of leadership subtly and sometimes covertly guide leadership decision-making. Under stress, the human brain becomes more susceptible to cognitive biases, which can influence decisions, relationships, and school culture.

This workshop will explore how self-leadership, informed by neuroscience and psychology, enables leaders to regulate their physiological stress responses. Participants will also learn how to facilitate co-regulation with others and model emotional intelligence. We will explore the connections between servant leadership and emotional intelligence, demonstrating how empathy and relational awareness foster psychological safety for the school community.

Participants will examine how leadership behaviors, especially under pressure, directly influence team dynamics, classroom climate, and whole-school culture. They will leave with practical strategies for leading with empathy, guiding with servant leadership, and fostering a psychologically safe school culture.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how basic neuroscience (e.g., stress responses and cognitive biases) influences leadership decision-making, behavior, and team dynamics in educational settings.

  • Apply self-leadership and emotional intelligence principles to manage stress, enhance cognitive flexibility, and support effective, relationship-centered leadership.

  • Analyze how leadership approaches—particularly servant leadership—shape psychological safety, classroom climate, and overall school culture.

  • Implement practical strategies to model adaptive, relational, and stable leadership that fosters trust, collaboration, and positive outcomes in schools.

Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
This workshop will discuss the significance/application of visual elements in non-literary texts in the Diploma Language A, Language and Literature courses. In Paper 1, the focus will be on the successful analysis and application of mainly criteria B and partially criteria A/C in relation to Paper 1 texts with visual elements. With regard to the Individual Oral, the selection of possible visual non-literary texts and their analysis in relation to various chosen global topics will be explored. Technical aspects such as colour schemes, composition, perspectives, symbols, implications and design concepts will be considered. The explanations in both parts of the IB-L&L-Exam are based on many years of experience as German L&L-DP-Teacher and as an German L&L-IB examiner, including participation in the respective standardisation teams. The workshop will be held in English. The selected texts will be GLL exam texts or German texts with mainly visual elements; existing text sections will be translated into English.
Participants in the workshop are expected to develop a deeper understanding of how visual elements function in non-literary texts within the context of the ‘DP Language A: Language and Literature’ course, and how these can be taught, selected (IO) and interpreted for the relevant exam components.

Building Practice, Not Positions: Moving International Schools from Rhetoric to Authentic Student Leadership, Agency, and Service.
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
This workshop critiques how international school student leadership often prioritizes confidence, compliance, and availability - narrowing leadership to titles and power - and invites educators to reframe leadership as service, emotional intelligence, and authentic agency using SEL and IFSEL competencies. Participants will interrogate whether their systems solicit mere feedback or genuine student voice and will explore practical, inclusive models (issue-based teams, student proposal cycles, low-threshold roles) that enable student-initiated, service-oriented action while preserving appropriate adult support.

Through reflection, discussion, and hands-on design, attendees will identify adult behaviors that limit agency, apply a Leadership Audit Tool to spot barriers, redesign one leadership structure to pilot immediately, and leave with concrete tools and coaching strategies to cultivate leadership as a learned practice that strengthens wellbeing, belonging, resilience, and global citizenship.

Chances and Limitations of grading handwritten work with AI
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
In this workshop, I will share my experience with Noten-Copilot, a GDPR-compliant app that transcribes handwritten student work, converts it into digital text, and assesses it using teacher-defined criteria. IS Hamburg has approved this pilot project, and I’m excited to open this space for shared exploration and professional dialogue.
I dare to say that many teachers find the idea of AI-supported assessment both appealing and intriguing - some may already have experimented with it, just as our students are doing. Together, I would like to explore not only its practical possibilities, but also how meaningful, transparent communication with students and families can be initiated and structured around its use.
Alongside this, we will engage with key questions of professional ethics, student data protection, and privacy, as well as the growing challenge of providing timely, meaningful feedback on increasingly complex student writing in middle and high school. We will reflect on transparency, trust, and the autonomy and professional competence of teachers in the assessment process.
This workshop will present one practical pathway toward fair, efficient, and pedagogically sound assessment of handwritten work - supporting high-quality feedback for students while strengthening sustainable, ethical professional practice for teachers.

Confronting Stereotypes in Today’s Classrooms
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
Students don’t arrive to school as blank slates. They bring with them ideas, assumptions, and stereotypes shaped by family, media, peers, and the world around them. This workshop will focus on how educators can effectively address the stereotypes students hold about one another, and how those beliefs can affect classroom culture, relationships, and learning.

Grounded in the principles of diversity, justice, belonging, and inclusion, the session will explore practical ways to guide students toward empathy, critical thinking, and respectful dialogue. Participants will examine common classroom scenarios, practice language for responding to biased comments in real time and learn strategies for facilitating conversations that challenge harmful narratives.

Through reflection and collaborative discussion, educators will build confidence in helping students question assumptions, appreciate differences, and recognize shared humanity.

Creative Inquiry in Action: Library and Art Collaboration
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
Our Art Teacher and Librarian partnership will showcase how transdisciplinary collaboration strengthens learning in the PYP. Students are introduced to artists and visual movements in the library, exploring texts, biographies, and critical perspectives. That learning is then translated into creative action in the art studio—experimenting with style, technique, and visual storytelling. We will share practical co-planning structures, aligned skill development, and authentic student examples that demonstrate how integrating information literacy with artistic practice deepens inquiry, strengthens agency, and elevates student voice.

Direct and indirect assessment of practical skills in science
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
Too often we assess practical skills through an indirect assessment: the humble lab report. However, this is not an accurate reflection of student ability in this domain. When assessing practical skills from a lab report, we make inferences on their competence based on just a few sections of their report (e.g. methodology and recorded data). Understanding can be obscured by poor language production skills, while also being prone to plagiarism and AI use. This is not to mention the onerous task that the lab report places on teachers: grading them.
Abrahams and Reiss (2015) argue that competence in practical skills is best measured through direct assessment, while when assessing understanding, the more familiar indirect assessment may be appropriate. How then can we make direct assessments of a student’s competence in performing laboratory techniques without overburdening the teacher? What alternatives exist for indirect assessment of understanding? In this session, I present an evidence-backed approach to practical skills teaching and assessment that I have trialled in my grade 9 and 10 physics classroom to success.

From Escalation to Regulation: Practical Strategies for Every Classroom
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
In international schools, behavior challenges often present differently than in other contexts. Rather than frequent overt disruption, educators more One-Hour Workshoply encounter anxiety, avoidance, shutdown, perfectionism, and subtle resistance — all of which significantly impact learning.
As Head of Learning Support, I work closely with teachers across grade levels to strengthen Tier 1 classroom practices that support regulation for all students, not just those receiving targeted interventions. This session introduces a practical, research-informed framework that any teacher can use to prevent escalation, respond effectively in the moment, and build emotionally safe, high-rigor learning environments.
Participants will leave with immediately applicable tools, including structured de-escalation protocols, task chunking strategies, and language shifts that reduce power struggles while maintaining clear expectations.
This session is designed for classroom teachers, team leaders, and instructional staff seeking realistic, proactive strategies that work across grade levels and student profiles.

Session Outcome(s)

Participants will:
  • Understand how regulation impacts academic engagement for all students
  • Recognize early signs of escalation and quiet dysregulation
  • Use task chunking to reduce overwhelm without lowering rigor
  • Shift classroom language to support regulation and accountability
  • Strengthen Tier 1 practices that prevent behavioral disruption school-wide

Literature in Action – Bringing Texts to Life Through Performance
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
How do we move literature from the page into the body, the voice, and the lived experience of our
students? Literature in Action is a dynamic workshop inspired by the IB’s Literature and Performance
curriculum. It is designed to equip educators with practical performance-based strategies to deepen
literary understanding.
This workshop bridges literary analysis and dramatic practice, demonstrating how performance
techniques—such as hot seating, tableaux, choral speaking, and scripted adaptation—can unlock
character motivation, theme, context, and language. Using extracts from widely taught texts and plays
(from Shakespeare to contemporary fiction), participants will actively explore how embodiment,
voice, and staging choices sharpen critical thinking and textual interpretation.
Teachers will leave with adaptable lesson frameworks, rehearsal-style questioning techniques, and
assessment strategies that lean towards performance that align with curriculum goals while
energising classroom engagement. No prior drama experience is required—only a willingness to step
into the ‘drama’ of the written work.

Little Voices, Big Impact: Co-Creating Learning Spaces with Young Learners
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
Why design an outdoor learning space for students when you can create it with them?

In this interactive workshop, I’ll share the story of how a group of Grade 1 learners took the lead in transforming our outdoor classroom—imagining possibilities, identifying needs, and working together to build, fix, and improve their environment. What began as a simple space evolved over time into a vibrant learning area shaped by student ideas, creativity, and action.

This session is ideal for teachers across elementary and contexts—whether you’re just beginning to develop a space or looking for ways to strengthen student voice, ownership, and responsibility within an existing one. We'll explore how students can drive and direct change, and how we as teachers can support them in taking action to build, fix, and improve their space.

Save the iPad Babies! Stories and Strategies for Age-Appropriate Technology Use
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
FYI-presentation draft is here-feel free to comment.

Description:
Maybe you’ve given your child your phone at a restaurant so you can enjoy your meal in peace. Maybe you have worried about a student’s use of social media or the intensity of their online gaming. Maybe you yourself have struggled to limit your own screen time. I know I have.

The blessing and curse of technology presents us all with daily challenges. Let’s take a look together at our school’s technology policies, our own use of technology, and the challenges we and our students face.

We will look at historical perspectives on technology, consider nature as a counter balance to screens, and consider research and suggestions from leaders in the field like Allison Ochs of Edit Change Management, Richard Louv, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

For the second half of the session, participants can choose to join one of the following groups: round table discussion of their school’s tech policies and challenges, stories and role play scenarios to create engagement and shift perspectives, or deep dive into the 5 C’s (Child, Content, Calm, Crowding out, and Communication) for your age group(s).

This session and the group work should lead to actionable takeaways for any setting.

Outcomes:
Open dialogue with colleagues from other schools about tech policies and challenges
Setting technology related goals for yourself, your classroom and your school
Considering perspectives on screen use through role play and social stories
Practical suggestions for modelling appropriate technology usage

The Magic of Reading: How to Run a School Reading Night that Builds Literacy, Community, and Student Motivation
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
Reading motivation remains one of the most significant predictors of long-term academic success, yet many students experience reading primarily as a school task rather than a meaningful, shared activity. At Dresden International School (PYP), we developed an annual Reading Night — a whole-grade literacy event embedded in Literacy Week — designed to create positive emotional connections to reading.
During the Reading Night, students gather after school for read-alouds, shared storytelling, literacy games, library visits, and independent flashlight reading before sleeping overnight at school with their classmates. The event intentionally combines literacy with belonging, excitement, and memory-making. Students who are typically reluctant readers often become highly engaged, and the days and weeks following the event show increased book borrowing, reading conversations, and voluntary reading.
This workshop shares our experiences from several years of running the Reading Night. Rather than presenting a perfect model, it will honestly explore how the event evolved, what worked well, and what did not. Practical aspects such as organisation, communication with parents, staffing, student wellbeing, and managing concerns about safety will be addressed. Participants will gain insight into how a literacy event can strengthen class community, support social-emotional development, and positively influence reading attitudes.T
he session is designed as a collaborative exchange. Participants will have opportunities to ask questions, share their own literacy traditions and challenges, and discuss how similar ideas could be adapted to their own school contexts — whether through a full Reading Night or smaller alternatives.
Participants will receive example materials (parent communication, schedules, activity ideas, and planning considerations) to support adaptation in their own settings.

The Nuts and Bolts of Starting a Whole School Home Language Program
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
How do you move from valuing multilingualism in theory to running a thriving program in practice? Using BBIS as a living case study, this workshop will focus on the logistics of building a sustainable Home Language (HL) framework from PYP through DP.
We will move beyond the "why" and dive straight into the "how": navigating scheduling hurdles, managing external tutors, and securing leadership buy-in. Whether you are starting from scratch or refining an existing model, you will gain a practical blueprint for shifting your school from a monolingual mindset to a multilingual powerhouse where the student’s linguistic identity is a resource for academic success and belonging.

Thinking about engagement in STEM
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
Description:
This presentation interrogates what we mean when we speak about “engagement” in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) within international school settings. Rather than equating engagement with visible participation or on-task behavior, the session conceptualizes it as a multidimensional construct involving cognitive challenge, emotional resonance, and intellectual agency. It critically examines how engagement is frequently interpreted through observable compliance, while deeper indicators—curiosity, persistence, and epistemic ownership—remain less visible but more consequential.

Drawing on contemporary educational research, the session considers how inquiry-driven pedagogy, authentic problem framing, and interdisciplinary design can foster sustained intellectual investment rather than short-term task completion. Particular attention is given to how teacher assumptions shape classroom structures that either enable or constrain meaningful participation.

Intended Impact:
Participants will leave with a conceptual framework for diagnosing disengagement and rethinking learning design. The session ultimately challenges not only how we teach STEM, but how we define and evaluate student involvement in complex, future-oriented disciplines.

Unpacking the ToK Essay Titles
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
The ToK essay is an integral part of the Core Program in the IB Diploma Program (DP), with the six major titles launched in September of every school year. In the workshop, we would like to “unpack” the titles by addressing key terms and identifying links to the different Areas of Knowledge (AoK).
By the end of the session, ToK teachers in the group will come away with concrete ideas about to support their students in the production of the essay in the different AoKs. Subject teachers will also leave with specific approaches they can take in their content areas to aid students in developing these specific titles.

Session Outcome(s)
  • To develop common understandings, approaches and perspectives about the ToK essay titles in M27.
  • To share examples and resources within the subjects to help students in addressing the ToK titles.
  • To give non ToK teachers tools to support students within content areas in answering the essay titles.

Better Together: Facilitation That Moves Groups Forward
Saturday September 19, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm CEST
“Facilitation is creating the conditions for a group to learn from one another, make progress on goals, and accomplish a task.” — Candice Bocala

This session is designed for educators who facilitate professional learning and want to strengthen their ability to design purposeful and impactful meetings. Too often, meetings are seen as routine parts of the school day, yet the way they are designed and led has a direct influence on school culture, collaboration, and collective effectiveness.

Thoughtful meeting design matters. Meetings communicate what a school values. They shape how people listen, contribute, think together, and move work forward. When intentionally facilitated, meetings can build trust, promote inclusion, strengthen collaboration, and create the conditions for shared ownership.

Participants will explore the mindset of an effective facilitator through the lens of Heart, Head, and Hands: leading with emotional awareness and trust, intellectual clarity and focus, and practical strategies that turn dialogue into action.

Participants will leave with practical approaches for leading meetings that better align with the values of effective collaboration.

Beyond Recess: Designing Outdoor Learning Environments for Early Learners
Saturday September 19, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm CEST
Outdoor spaces in early learning settings are often viewed primarily as areas for recess or free play. However, thoughtfully designed outdoor environments can function as powerful extensions of the classroom, supporting inquiry, creativity, physical development, and cross-curricular learning.
This roundtable will explore how educators can intentionally design and use outdoor spaces as intentional learning environments rather than simply recreational areas. Participants will share experiences, challenges, and practical strategies for transforming school grounds into spaces that support literacy, numeracy, science exploration, and social development.
Through collaborative discussion, educators will consider how outdoor learning environments can encourage student curiosity, sensory exploration, environmental awareness, and authentic learning experiences.

Data in Action: Decisions That Impact Student Growth Through Personalized Learning
Saturday September 19, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm CEST
This session explores practical strategies for using data to inform instructional decisions and support personalized learning in elementary literacy and mathematics classrooms. Participants will examine how assessment data can guide flexible student groupings, targeted instruction, and the organization of learning spaces and resources to better support student growth.

Drawing on our experience as multi-age teachers, we will share how ongoing assessment, reflective observation, and responsive planning can help teachers address individual learning needs while maintaining curricular and grade-level expectations.

Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own classroom contexts and begin planning ways to apply these strategies in their teaching. Whether working in single-grade or multi-age environments, educators will leave with adaptable approaches for using data to strengthen engagement, personalize learning, and support sustained student success.

Developing Agency in DP Classes
Saturday September 19, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm CEST
This one-hour workshop focuses on practical strategies to strengthen student agency in DP classrooms. As students in Grades 11 and 12 prepare for post-secondary pathways, careers, and increased independence, fostering agency becomes essential to their success. Agency goes beyond engagement—it involves helping students develop ownership, voice, self-direction, and the confidence to take responsibility for their learning.
During this session, we will explore what student agency looks like in action and examine how instructional design, assessment practices, and classroom culture can either promote or limit student autonomy. Participants will reflect on current practices and identify opportunities to embed purposeful choice, goal-setting, authentic learning experiences, and meaningful feedback into their teaching.
The workshop will provide practical, classroom-ready strategies that can be implemented immediately, while also encouraging thoughtful discussion about how we can shift from compliance-driven learning to empowering students as active partners in their education.

Engagement and Reflection: Making Feedback Work in English Exam Classes
Saturday September 19, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm CEST
Description:
I will explore strategies to help International Baccalaureate and IGCSE English students engage actively with feedback by making it clear, actionable, and integral to the learning cycle. I will also share practical ways—through documentation, peer collaboration, and kinesthetic activities—to guide purposeful reflection so students can turn feedback into measurable improvement and take greater ownership of their progress.

Intended Impact:
We often invest significant time in giving feedback, yet students often struggle to interpret or apply it effectively. This workshop will offer practical tools to close that gap, helping exam-level English students engage more deeply with feedback to strengthen their writing, improve assessment outcomes, and take greater responsibility for their learning.

Outcome:
Teachers will leave with actionable ideas they can implement immediately, supported by insights shared during the session. By the end of the workshop, you will have:
  • Practical, ready-to-use strategies for feedback and reflection
  • Templates and examples for student documentation
  • A clearer understanding of how to build a culture of ownership and improvement in English classrooms

From Framework to Classroom: A Collaborative Session for Literacy Leaders and PYP Decision-Makers
Saturday September 19, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm CEST
When the IB released the updated PYP Language guidelines, we didn’t just create a new document. We set out to build a new culture.
Join our Language Coordinator and PYP Coordinator as they reveal the real story behind a year-long journey to design a living, breathing language continuum. Created for PYP coordinators and decision-makers, literacy leaders, and lower school pedagogical leaders, this session goes beyond theory to show what it actually takes to lead meaningful change. Get an inside look at our “navigation map,” from global inspiration to high-energy, and occasionally high-friction, collaboration that pushed our thinking forward. No glossing over the hard parts. We will share our “productive failures,” including timing missteps, jargon traps, and the lessons that made our work stronger, sharper, and more sustainable. Walk away with practical insights, honest reflections, and strategies you can use to bridge policy and practice in your own context.

Math Projects – Helping students see math as a meaningful, powerful tool
Saturday September 19, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm CEST
How can we get students more excited about math? Apply our skills to projects rather than just move from one lesson to the next!
Using our existing math programme as a foundation, I planned project-based experiences that either link several math units together or align with social studies and science topics. Instead of teaching skills in isolation, students immediately apply new concepts—such as geometry, measurement, data, calculations, and problem-solving—to authentic, real-life contexts.
Whether designing a sustainable community space or applying fraction and decimal knowledge during a medieval market fair during our history unit, students use math with purpose.
I will share what our grade 4 team has tried out and will hopefully have you leave with some practical ideas you can use in your classroom.
If you are happy to share your grade level, math curriculum and social studies/science topics prior to attending the presentation, I promise to try and provide some ideas to get you started on your new unit.

Saturday September 19, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm CEST
Description:
Do you enjoy a good mystery? Do you know about the “Queens of Crime”? This engaging one-hour workshop invites educators to explore the captivating realm of Golden Age detective fiction, focusing on the influential works of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Ngaio Marsh, collectively dubbed the “Queens of Crime.” Participants will delve into the defining characteristics of this literary period, which flourished from the 1920s to the 1930s, with principal works spanning from 1920 to 1940. The workshop will analyse how these elements manifest in Agatha Christie’s renowned novel, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, highlighting plot structures, tone, and symbolism. Educators will know how to incorporate these features into short classroom activities, enabling students to creatively engage with the material, enhance their understanding of narrative techniques, and develop critical thinking skills.

Intended Impact:
By the end of the session, educators will be able to inspire and elevate their students’ appreciation for classic detective fiction. They will leave with a toolkit of themes from which to approach the study of detective fiction from this era.

The Power of Play – How an educator’s playfulness shapes the learning environment
Saturday September 19, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm CEST
In early childhood settings, emotional safety is the foundation for curiosity, confidence, and meaningful play. This interactive session explores how educators’ own mindfulness and gratitude practices directly shape classroom climate and children’s ability to feel secure, take risks, and engage deeply in learning.
Grounded in the belief that educator well being drives student well being, this session highlights the powerful ripple effect of adult regulation. When educators intentionally cultivate calm, presence, and gratitude, they model emotional resilience and create environments where young children feel safe to explore, question, and grow.

Participants will engage in a hands-on creative activity, decorating a small wooden heart or stone to serve as a personal gratitude touchstone. Through guided reflection, they will connect this tangible object to a simple 30-second reset practice that can be used during busy classroom moments.
Educators will leave with:
  • A personal gratitude touchstone and reset strategy
  • 3–5 classroom-ready mindfulness and gratitude practices
  • A practical “Ripple Model” framework linking educator well being to child safety and engagement

Creating Creators: How Schools Can Teach Business, Money and Entrepreneurial Mindsets
Saturday September 19, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm CEST
Schools do an excellent job preparing students for exams, university applications, and academic success, but far fewer intentionally teach the skills needed to understand money, spot opportunities, think entrepreneurially, and create value in the real world. This interactive workshop explores how schools can begin to close that gap. In this highly interactive workshop, we explore how business thinking, financial intelligence, and entrepreneurial mindset can be introduced in age-appropriate, engaging, and playful ways across the school journey. Through practical examples, discussion, and a hands-on experience with our entrepreneurship game, participants will discover how to move students from passive consumers to confident creators, builders, and future-ready decision-makers.  This session is designed to spark fresh thinking, challenge traditional assumptions about “future readiness,” and provide practical inspiration for educators and school leaders looking to strengthen real-world learning in their schools.
Intended Outcomes: Participants will:
  • explore why business literacy, financial intelligence, and entrepreneurial thinking are becoming essential elements of future-ready education;
  • discover practical, age-appropriate ways to introduce these themes in school settings;
  • experience how play-based and experiential learning can make business and money concepts more accessible, engaging, and relevant for students;
  • leave with concrete ideas for helping students develop initiative, problem-solving, opportunity recognition, and value-creation mindsets.
Audience: School leaders, curriculum leaders, innovation leads, teachers, counsellors, and educators interested in strengthening future-ready learning through entrepreneurship, financial intelligence, and real-world skill development.

Digital Citizenship in the Middle Years: A Grade 6 Case Study
Saturday September 19, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm CEST
This workshop is designed to share how Digital Citizenship has been woven into the pastoral and ICT curriculum to support students, focusing on Grade 6. This presentation’s starting point was a survey to gather more awareness of how students use tech, which informed both designing a pastoral unit “Our Digital Lives,” as well revamping the Digital Citizenship components in the ICT curriculum. Further development is being done in the domain of algorithmic literacy, or, pedagogical methods that explore how algorithms influence all aspects of digital life, from online identities to the types of content that young learners are “fed” on social media and online gaming platforms.

We will explore these questions:
-How do students interpret and critique what they see online?
-To what extent do online conversations intervene in classroom socialisation?
-How do we teach younger learners about digital and algorithmic literacy?
-What are the best practices for curriculum development, given the rapid pace of technological change and the continual development of AI?

Saturday September 19, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm CEST
In this session we will review an example of a PYP Unit of Inquiry which is intrinsically collaborative between the Homeroom and Specialist classrooms: Film Music. We will reflect upon what makes a strong and authentic transdisciplinary unit, in which students are able to identify connecting themes and transfer key concepts from one subject to another. Attendees will learn about the scaffolding, planning, and execution involved through the lens of this particular third grade Music unit at Berlin Metropolitan School, considering how to make the most of a music teacher's time and resources and promote the elements of the PYP. Related concepts addressed in the unit include music theory, history, expression, culture, and communication. We will discuss related mini-projects and possible extensions, differentiation strategies, technology integration, and assessment and performance opportunities. While this session is geared toward primary teachers, all are welcome as the ideas and concepts can be adapted to fit the needs of your students and school.

Feedback That Improves Teaching: Evidence‑Based Conversations After Lesson Visits
Saturday September 19, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm CEST
Highquality lesson visits have the potential to significantly improve teaching, but only when the feedback is clear, specific, and directly connected to student learning. Aimed at teachers, Middle Leaders, and those involved in developing teaching and learning, this session reframes observations – or visits – as learningfocused enquiries rather than performance checks. Together, participants will look closely at how to collect meaningful classroom evidence by noticing what students are doing, saying, writing, and thinking, and how to connect these insights to precise teacher actions that shape learning.

We will model short, effective feedback conversations that identify one high‑leverage next step, avoiding vague praise, generic targets, or overwhelming lists of “areas to improve.” Drawing on research‑informed practice and real classroom examples, this session offers practical tools and scripts that make feedback clearer, calmer, and genuinely developmental. Participants will leave with a simple, sustainable approach to lesson visits that builds trust and leads to lasting improvements in teacher practice.

From Commitment to Coherence: What One International IB School Reveals About Inclusive Practice in 2026
Saturday September 19, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm CEST
This session draws on dissertation research conducted in an international IB World School in Germany to examine how educators and senior leaders understand preparedness for inclusive practice, and which school structures most strongly support or constrain implementation. Focusing on the gap between inclusive values and daily practice, the session explores where inclusive practice appears to rely on individual effort and where greater school-wide coherence may be needed to support diverse learners.

Participants will leave with practical questions and a clear framework for reflection, based on the study’s findings, to help them identify where inclusive practice in their school is well aligned, and where it still relies too heavily on individual effort rather than consistent systems. The session will also point to the Index for Inclusion as one possible tool for whole-school reflection and review.

Inclusive Classroom Strategies to Support Elementary Learners with Neurodiversity
Saturday September 19, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm CEST
This one-hour professional development session is designed to equip elementary educators with practical, research-informed, and immediately applicable classroom strategies to support neurodiverse learners. These learners may include students with ADHD, autism, sensory processing differences, executive functioning challenges, anxiety, or other learning and neurological variations.
As classrooms become increasingly diverse, educators are often asked to meet a wide range of needs with limited training or resources. This session addresses that gap by providing educators with realistic tools that can be implemented within existing classroom structures—without requiring specialized programs, additional staffing, or excessive preparation time.
The session emphasizes inclusive practices that benefit all students, not only those with identified needs. By shifting the focus from reactive, compliance-based behavior management to proactive regulation and accessibility, teachers are supported in creating calmer, more predictable, and more responsive classroom environments that reduce stress for both students and educators.

UDL and self-regulated learning in DP Language and Literature
Saturday September 19, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm CEST
In this workshop, I will share practical, classroom-tested strategies and approaches to teaching and learning in the Language and Literature classroom through the lens of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), with a particular emphasis on strengthening student engagement and self-regulation.The session will focus on concrete techniques that teachers can immediately implement. We will examine how engagement is not simply about motivation, but about cultivating relevance, challenge, voice, and agency within the learning process. These strategies are particularly effective in preparing students to become assessment-capable learners; students who understand learning goals, can monitor their own progress, and can identify next steps for improvement. More broadly, participants will consider how UDL-informed practices support the development of expert learners: students who are purposeful and motivated, resourceful and knowledgeable, and strategic and goal-directed.

Developing Emotional Intelligence Through Coaching: A Practical Framework for Building Lasting Skills
Saturday September 19, 2026 4:00pm - 5:00pm CEST
Calming a child helps in the moment.
Coaching a child changes the next moment.

As educators we have been hearing/working a lot on supporting children in naming feelings and regulating emotions. In this session we will go deeper and think about what comes after- coaching kids through what to do next—using meaningful, reflective conversations rather than quick fixes or distraction and consequences.

Emotional intelligence isn’t complete when a child can name a feeling.
The real learning happens when we help them figure out what to do with that feeling next.

This workshop teaches adults how to:
  1. Reflect what happened
  2. Explore impact
  3. Build a “conversation toolkit” for future moments

Developing Talent in the Classroom- Identifying and Nurturing Exceptional Learners
Saturday September 19, 2026 4:00pm - 5:00pm CEST
Very few students fit perfectly within the normal distribution curve in all aspects of their academic and personal life. Yet, we owe each of our students an engaging and challenging educational experience that recognizes their strengths and areas of exceptionality.  Students whose abilities or talents lie in the far ends of the range of abilities often are overlooked in planning for the majority of students.

First,  I share some of the traits and characteristics of highly able students and highly talented students.  I will provide some tools and metrics to assist teachers and staff in identifying, supporting, and enriching the talents of those exceptional students . The social and emotional intricacies of highly able students will be discussed.

Lastly, and time dependent, we will engage in some lesson revision, highlighting some ways to bring rigor and challenge to the highly able students in our classroom,  utilizing AI and questioning strategies.

Teachers will leave the workshop with a better understanding of the needs and challenges of highly able students and will have some tools to provide some appropriate and challenging academic experiences.

From Re-reading to Retrieval: Evidence-Based Revision Strategies That Actually Work
Saturday September 19, 2026 4:00pm - 5:00pm CEST
Many students invest hours in revision strategies that feel productive but lead to fragile learning, high anxiety, and rapid forgetting. Cognitive science research shows that some of the most popular techniques-such as re-reading and highlighting-are among the least effective, while less intuitive approaches such as retrieval practice, spacing, and learning through error produce durable understanding and deeper transfer.
In this interactive session, participants will explore key findings from cognitive psychology and neuroscience on how learning really happens. Using concrete classroom examples from secondary and Diploma contexts, the workshop will unpack why testing can be a powerful learning tool, how distributed practice supports long-term retention, and how “getting it wrong” can strengthen understanding rather than undermine confidence.
Participants will critically reflect on their current revision and assessment practices and redesign a learning activity using evidence-based strategies that improve retention, reduce cognitive overload, and support student well-being.

Growing Minds: Helping Students Understand and Strengthen Their Executive Function Skills.
Saturday September 19, 2026 4:00pm - 5:00pm CEST
As students move from primary to secondary school, success increasingly depends on more than subject knowledge—it hinges on executive functioning skills such as planning, attention control, working memory, and self-monitoring. In this interactive workshop, we explore how teachers can help students recognize these cognitive processes in themselves and develop strategies to strengthen them. Participants will be introduced to a short, flexible teaching unit on Executive Functions and Brain Development, designed for use in upper primary or lower secondary classrooms. The unit comprises four lessons focusing on: (1) understanding key executive functions; (2) exploring how the prefrontal cortex develops; (3) applying metacognitive thinking to learning tasks; and (4) developing personalized action plans to improve one chosen skill.

Skill, Well-being & Structure: A New Approach to Foundational Literacy
Saturday September 19, 2026 4:00pm - 5:00pm CEST
In international school settings, many lower and middle school students continue to struggle with foundational literacy skills long after the developmental-appropriate intervention window has passed. These challenges are often intertwined with second-language acquisition needs, unidentified learning difficulties, fine-motor struggles, interrupted schooling and social-emotional stress.
This interactive workshop will explore complex realities teachers face when supporting older students with gaps in phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency and self-confidence. Participants of this workshop will examine how literacy deficits impact emotional well-being and classroom engagement and how to rebuild both skill and self-belief simultaneously.
This workshop will include practical examples of combining structured literacy approaches such as UFLI and Heggerty, adapted for older learners and multilingual contexts. Attendees will engage in guided discussions, share experiences from their own teaching settings and collaboratively generate strategies that are responsive and structured.

The Conjecture Classroom: Building Mathematical Thinkers
Saturday September 19, 2026 4:00pm - 5:00pm CEST
What if mathematics classrooms were designed so that thinking was unavoidable? This workshop introduces a practical framework that shifts students from procedure-followers to conjecture-makers. At its heart is a simple but powerful cycle: Conjecture → Test → Break → Repair → Generalise. Students begin with patterns, propose ideas, stress-test them with counterexamples, and refine their reasoning mirroring how real mathematics evolves, from exploring infinite limits to understanding symmetry or growth.

Participants will explore the Two-Path Solution Rule, where problems demand multiple representations, and Error-First Teaching, where carefully chosen mistakes spark deeper reasoning. Through Low Floor, High Ceiling, No Hint task design, every learner can enter, yet no artificial endpoint restricts exploration. Short, recurring Small Research Tasks cultivate independence, while intentional Math Talk Moves help students articulate, defend, and refine their thinking.
More than strategies, this session focuses on identity: helping students see themselves as mathematical thinkers.

Grounded in the FIS’ journey of becoming a school committed to restorative practices, the workshop explores means for placing relationships at the centre of learning, which ultimately strengthens wellbeing, empathy, accountability, and positive school culture.

Participants will explore how restorative practices support communities at both classroom and whole-school levels, and gain insights for developing an action plan. Classroom content focuses on practical relational strategies, managing behaviour while maintaining high expectations, and responding to harm in ways that repair and restore. Whole-school content includes building a relational culture, amplifying student voice, strengthening accountability, and supporting systemic change.

Facilitated through relational strategies for building group dynamics, such as circle practices, and various routines for guided dialogue, the day is a deep dive into restorative practices in action. You will leave with practical tools and approaches to support your journey within your own school context.

Session Outcome(s)
Participants will walk away with tangible tools for putting relationships at the heart of teaching and learning, which ultimately strengthens wellbeing, empathy, accountability, and a positive school culture.

A Year-Long Journey: Implementing the PYP Exhibition Through Staged Inquiry
Saturday September 19, 2026 5:15pm - 6:15pm CEST
Discover how to transform the PYP exhibition from a daunting end-of-year project into an empowering year-long journey of inquiry and action. This session shares a proven, staged approach that builds student agency and produces meaningful community impact.

Starting with exploration of what the exhibition is and connecting to student interests, we progress through identifying local challenges and opportunities. Through reading articles and observing their own neighborhoods, students develop authentic inquiry questions. They then narrow their focus, conduct research through interviews, surveys, and experiments, and design actions that matter to them. The entire school community becomes involved, creating a powerful sense of collective purpose—especially meaningful in small school settings.

This staged process ensures students take genuine ownership while maintaining manageable pacing, resulting in presentations that reflect deep inquiry and authentic action.

Designing Learning Environments Where Everyone Thrives
Saturday September 19, 2026 5:15pm - 6:15pm CEST
Grounded in neuroscience and the Self-Reg research of Stuart Shanker and Susan Hopkins, this session explores how we thrive in learning environments where we feel safe, rooted, balanced, capable, and trusted. It invites educators to intentionally design a learning environment where self-regulation is not demanded of children, but thoughtfully cultivated through relationships, structure, and shared understanding. Using the Self-Reg “5 Look Fors,” participants will explore what each element means within the lived reality of classrooms and schools, and how it translates into daily practice. Through reflection and practical examples, educators will begin to see the learning environment through a Self-Reg lens recognizing how space, schedules, transitions, and interactions shape students’ ability to regulate, connect, and learn.

Empowering Students Through Inquiry-Based Learning and Peer Teaching in DP Sciences
Saturday September 19, 2026 5:15pm - 6:15pm CEST
This session is designed for DP sciences, with a specific focus on integrating inquiry-based activities that allow students to take control of their learning while mastering key content, particularly in science. While many parts of the curriculum require teacher-led instruction, there are certain topics in subjects like physics, chemistry, and biology where we can step back and let students drive the lesson through exploration and discovery. The challenge lies in balancing this inquiry approach with the need to cover all necessary content, particularly within the time constraints of the IB curriculum. In this workshop, teachers will learn how to create inquiry-driven lessons that promote self-learning, while still ensuring that practice test questions and required content are effectively integrated. We’ll explore ways to manage time efficiently, allowing students to engage deeply with the material without sacrificing essential learning objectives. By shifting to a facilitator role in certain units, teachers can encourage active student participation, critical thinking, and problem-solving. The focus will be on creating a dynamic classroom environment where students take ownership of their learning, preparing them for success in assessments while fostering a deeper understanding of the subject.

Evidence-Based Gamification in Foreign Language Classrooms
Saturday September 19, 2026 5:15pm - 6:15pm CEST
Gamification has become a popular trend in education, yet its impact depends entirely on thoughtful design. This interactive workshop explores how evidence-based gamification can meaningfully enhance motivation, retention, and communicative competence in foreign language teaching.
Grounded in motivational theory and classroom research, the session will briefly examine why superficial reward systems often fail and what actually works. Participants will experience a tool to gamify their lessons and units, and explore how narrative, progression systems, and challenge structures can increase student engagement without sacrificing academic rigour.

Finding a new job for 2027? How to find the school that fits, and prepare your application.
Saturday September 19, 2026 5:15pm - 6:15pm CEST
Whether you expect to be looking for a new job in Germany, or further afield, this session will be part workshop, part discussion, to help your application speak with clarity and purpose to those reading it. Based on the joy, challenge and frustration of reading hundreds of applications a year from people who do not always make it easy to see what they might bring, where and how they have gained their experience or whether they would be happy in Leipzig, Dehradun or Weimar, we will look at the good, the bad and the ugly.

We cannot always find the mentors we need to turn to when making job applications, particularly if we want to keep an application quiet until it becomes real. This session will take place within a circle of trust in which anyone can ask anything about what school hiring committees and Heads might be thinking when it comes to hiring.

Bring along your CVs, your aspirations and your questions and we can spend an hour now saving hours later in the year.

From Debate to Competition: Building a Culture of Mathematical Reasoning in MYP & DP
Saturday September 19, 2026 5:15pm - 6:15pm CEST
This interactive workshop explores how structured mathematical debate and thoughtfully designed competitions can strengthen reasoning, communication, and confidence in MYP and DP mathematics classrooms. Rather than viewing debate and competitions as enrichment for a small group of high achievers, this session reframes them as powerful pedagogical tools that support all learners while maintaining high cognitive demand.
Participants will experience a short mathematical debate and examine practical classroom structures such as “Always/Sometimes/Never,” error-analysis debates, and claim–counterclaim formats. The session will then connect these strategies to internal and external competitions, including Kangaroo-style challenges, school-based reasoning events, and interschool initiatives. Emphasis will be placed on how competition problems can be repurposed to promote discussion, justification, and deeper conceptual understanding.
The workshop also addresses alignment with MYP criteria and DP assessment objectives, highlighting how debate and competition strengthen justification, precision of language, and mathematical argumentation—skills directly linked to examination success and internal assessments.

Independent, Engaged, and On‑Task: Self‑Paced Centers That Practically Run Themselves!
Saturday September 19, 2026 5:15pm - 6:15pm CEST
Looking for math centers that feel joyful, purposeful, and… actually independent?
This hands-on session introduces simple, paper-based tools that help students in Grades 1 to 5 work independently and confidently during math centers. Participants will explore practical ways to create levelled, self-paced activities that encourage learners to write their own equations, record their ideas, and track their progress. These strategies support student agency, strengthen self-regulation, and make differentiation easier without relying on worksheets. Teachers will also try out tracking systems that guide students in choosing the right level of challenge and staying engaged. By the end of the session, participants will leave with adaptable templates, activity ideas, and practical structures that help math centers run smoothly in any PYP classroom.”

Impact:
“This session aims to empower teachers with easy-to-implement systems that increase student independence and reduce classroom management stress. By adopting self‑paced, self‑tracking math activities, teachers can foster stronger student ownership, smoother center routines, and more effective differentiation. Ultimately, the impact is a learning environment where students feel capable and motivated, and help teachers gain the freedom to focus on responsive, high‑quality instruction.”

Learning Outcomes
  • Design independent, paper-based math center activities that encourage student thinking and engagement.
  • Implement simple systems that help students track progress and choose appropriate levels of challenge.
  • Apply structures that support differentiation, student agency, and smoother math center routines.

Knowing Students, Knowing Ourselves: From Reaction to Relationship
Saturday September 19, 2026 5:15pm - 6:15pm CEST
Research on school belonging shows that students who feel seen, valued, and understood demonstrate stronger engagement, improved behavior, and higher academic achievement. In internationally mobile school communities—where students navigate cultural transitions, multilingual environments, and evolving identities—relational safety is a critical protective factor. Educator self-awareness and regulation directly shape classroom climate and students’ sense of belonging.
Grounded in belonging research, attachment theory, and co-regulation frameworks, this interactive workshop examines how teacher reactivity and attunement influence learning readiness. Participants will reflect on personal triggers, explore culturally responsive interpretations of behavior, and practice practical strategies—including the 2x10 relationship approach, connection-before-correction language, co-regulation tools, and structured repair conversations—to move from reaction to intentional, relationship-centered practice.

Let's perform together - WE are the AGIS band tonight!
Saturday September 19, 2026 5:15pm - 6:15pm CEST
Bring an instrument. Bring your voice. Bring your passion. Bring your energy. Then we take a bit of organization, a bit of experience, and trust that we can do it...and poof!  We have live music entertainment for Saturday night at the AGIS Conference! We will choose 8-10 songs to play and perform with almost no rehearsal and a whole lot of faith.

Leaps of faith rely on strong buy-in from the constituents, sharing a common goal, and trust in the participants' capabilities, knowledge, and experience. So leap with us and let's perform tonight! (There will be no notes, chord charts, or lyrics provided, so devices are extremely useful for knowing what to play or sing even if you don't have all of the world's music memorized).

Criteria for choosing songs include: audience recognition (multi-generational, international), danceability, sing-along-ability, and that somebody can sing lead on the song.

Strengthening Advisory: Sharing Our Experience and Learning Together
Saturday September 19, 2026 5:15pm - 6:15pm CEST
Advisory can be one of the most meaningful parts of a student’s day — and one of the most challenging parts of a teacher’s role. In this full-day workshop, we’ll open up our playbook and share what we are doing at our school: what’s working, what’s evolving, and what we’re still trying to improve, while looking to make new connections and hear what is happening in the Advisory program at other schools. We’ll walk through how our advisory program is structured, how we support advisors, and how we try to build authentic relationships with students while balancing everything else on our plates. More importantly, this won’t be a sit-and-get session. We want to hear from you. Through discussion and practical planning time, we’ll workshop together and share strategies that have made a difference. Our goal of the session is for all of us to leave with stronger ideas and a network of colleagues who believe advisory can be more than just another block in the schedule. Session Outcome(s) ● Reflect on their own advisory program and identify what’s working well and what could improve. ● Explore practical strategies and tools to strengthen student engagement and advisor support. ● Collaborate with peers to generate solutions to common advisory challenges. ● Leave with ideas and resources they can adapt and implement in their own school. ● Build connections with other advisors and leaders for ongoing support and collaboration.

The Coaching Habit
Saturday September 19, 2026 5:15pm - 6:15pm CEST
In an era of rapid change, increasing complexity, and competing demands, educators are often pushed to look for better answers. This session argues that what schools most need are better questions. Drawing on Michael Bungay Stanier’s The Coaching Habit, the presentation focuses on a small set of powerful coaching questions and why coaching is fundamental to effective teaching and leadership.

Coaching is not about fixing problems or giving advice. It is about creating the conditions for thinking. Participants will explore questions such as: What’s the real challenge here? What do you really want? And what’s the smallest useful step forward? These deceptively simple questions help shift conversations from telling to listening, from compliance to ownership, and from short-term solutions to long-term growth.

The session will connect these questions to everyday educational contexts, including classroom practice, professional conversations, and leadership decision-making. Teachers will see how coaching questions support student agency, metacognition, and wellbeing. Leaders will examine how a coaching approach builds trust, clarity, and collective responsibility across teams.

Rather than adding another initiative, coaching offers a practical mindset that strengthens learning, improves relationships, and supports sustainable improvement. Participants will leave with sense of why coaching matters and how to apply it.
