Introduction to Positive Discipline- Moving beyond behaviour management
Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
In this interactive session, educators will explore the core philosophy of Jane Nelsen’s Positive Discipline. Moving beyond traditional rewards and punishments, participants will engage in hands-on activities designed to foster a deep sense of belonging and significance for every student. Educators will leave with a "toolbox" of ready-to-use strategies that turn daily classroom challenges into opportunities for character building and community growth.
Key Learning Objectives:
  • Build a Culture of Belonging: Practice specific experiential activities, such as "Connection Before Correction," that strengthen the teacher-student bond and improve classroom climate.
  • Foster Executive Functioning through Routine: Discover how to implement visual schedules and "Wheels of Choice" to support self-regulation and independence in primary-aged learners.
  • Shift from Consequences to Solutions: Learn how to facilitate "Joint Problem Solving" and use "Curiosity Questions" to help students take ownership of their choices.
  • Implement Immediate Tools: Master at least three "Monday-ready" tools, such as the "Positive Time-Out" or "Class Meetings," to address social and behavioural challenges effectively.

Confronting Stereotypes in Today’s Classrooms
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
Students don’t arrive to school as blank slates. They bring with them ideas, assumptions, and stereotypes shaped by family, media, peers, and the world around them. This workshop will focus on how educators can effectively address the stereotypes students hold about one another, and how those beliefs can affect classroom culture, relationships, and learning.

Grounded in the principles of diversity, justice, belonging, and inclusion, the session will explore practical ways to guide students toward empathy, critical thinking, and respectful dialogue. Participants will examine common classroom scenarios, practice language for responding to biased comments in real time and learn strategies for facilitating conversations that challenge harmful narratives.

Through reflection and collaborative discussion, educators will build confidence in helping students question assumptions, appreciate differences, and recognize shared humanity.

Thinking about engagement in STEM
Saturday September 19, 2026 11:15am - 12:15pm CEST
Description:
This presentation interrogates what we mean when we speak about “engagement” in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) within international school settings. Rather than equating engagement with visible participation or on-task behavior, the session conceptualizes it as a multidimensional construct involving cognitive challenge, emotional resonance, and intellectual agency. It critically examines how engagement is frequently interpreted through observable compliance, while deeper indicators—curiosity, persistence, and epistemic ownership—remain less visible but more consequential.

Drawing on contemporary educational research, the session considers how inquiry-driven pedagogy, authentic problem framing, and interdisciplinary design can foster sustained intellectual investment rather than short-term task completion. Particular attention is given to how teacher assumptions shape classroom structures that either enable or constrain meaningful participation.

Intended Impact:
Participants will leave with a conceptual framework for diagnosing disengagement and rethinking learning design. The session ultimately challenges not only how we teach STEM, but how we define and evaluate student involvement in complex, future-oriented disciplines.

Exploring Music in Film – Building a Transdiciplinary Unit of Inquiry from a Specialist Perspective
Saturday September 19, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm CEST
In this session we will review an example of a PYP Unit of Inquiry which is intrinsically collaborative between the Homeroom and Specialist classrooms: Film Music. We will reflect upon what makes a strong and authentic transdisciplinary unit, in which students are able to identify connecting themes and transfer key concepts from one subject to another. Attendees will learn about the scaffolding, planning, and execution involved through the lens of this particular third grade Music unit at Berlin Metropolitan School, considering how to make the most of a music teacher's time and resources and promote the elements of the PYP. Related concepts addressed in the unit include music theory, history, expression, culture, and communication. We will discuss related mini-projects and possible extensions, differentiation strategies, technology integration, and assessment and performance opportunities. While this session is geared toward primary teachers, all are welcome as the ideas and concepts can be adapted to fit the needs of your students and school.

Visual Media in Education: Imagining Artificial Intelligence
Saturday September 19, 2026 4:00pm - 5:00pm CEST
Description:
Join me for this interactive session where we will explore the history of artificial intelligence through movies, illustrations, and icons. How people see movies, cartoons, and shows has always shaped AI. From its early days as simple machines to its many forms today, visual media has led to common misunderstandings about what AI really is. The objective of the workshop is to spark ethical debates amongst primary and secondary students and teachers by providing a set of valuable visual resources. The presentation aims to give you engaging ideas for using these learning materials across different school subjects, such as science, tech, history, and art.

Intended Impact:
This interactive workshop empowers international primary and secondary teachers to critically explore how movies and visual media have shaped global perceptions of artificial intelligence, equipping them with practical, cross-curricular resources to spark ethical debates, strengthen media literacy, and foster informed, responsible AI discussions in diverse classrooms.
