From Sketchbook to Portfolio: Teacher Toolkit
Saturday September 19, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CEST
We are two teachers that have a design and a traditional visual arts background, and that use sketchbooks as a daily tool. We collaborated closely when drafting lower secondary, IGCSE and IB DP Schemes of Work to ensure maximal alignment in building up sketchbook skills. This is an ideal way to enable students to track and visualise their progress.
This presentation aims to equip visual arts educators with practical strategies to transform the sketchbook from a passive notebook into a dynamic tool that directly feeds into IB DP portfolio and IGCSE coursework. Designed for all secondary art teachers, it addresses the challenge of guiding students toward sustained experimentation, meaningful annotation, and reflective practice.

Participants will explore structured sketchbook routines: observational drawing prompts, artist analysis templates, and layouts that can be used to organise information on the page.

Participants will leave with a ready-to-use teacher toolkit and knowledge of the advantages and ways to use a sketchbook as a routine in and outside the classroom.

Queens of Crime: The Golden Age
Saturday September 19, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm CEST
Description:
Do you enjoy a good mystery? Do you know about the “Queens of Crime”? This engaging one-hour workshop invites educators to explore the captivating realm of Golden Age detective fiction, focusing on the influential works of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Ngaio Marsh, collectively dubbed the “Queens of Crime.” Participants will delve into the defining characteristics of this literary period, which flourished from the 1920s to the 1930s, with principal works spanning from 1920 to 1940. The workshop will analyse how these elements manifest in Agatha Christie’s renowned novel, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, highlighting plot structures, tone, and symbolism. Educators will know how to incorporate these features into short classroom activities, enabling students to creatively engage with the material, enhance their understanding of narrative techniques, and develop critical thinking skills.

Intended Impact:
By the end of the session, educators will be able to inspire and elevate their students’ appreciation for classic detective fiction. They will leave with a toolkit of themes from which to approach the study of detective fiction from this era.
