About me
At ISD we use a hybrid model to support our multilingual students. I push-in to science and humanities lessons and I lead dedicated elective EAL classes to support our multilingual learners in these subjects. I also teach interdisciplinary science and humanities units of inquiry across our Grade 6 cohort as part of a teaching team.I will share what is working well for students dealing with the challenges of learning new subject specific material in their second, third or fourth language.I will share some insights into how technology can help ELA students to participate in the learning in real time (or as close as possible thereto) within subject lessons. I will discuss key strategies and helpful hints that have proven useful in our ELA and subject specific classrooms regardless of the level of English across the classes and groups. My focus as a classroom teacher is to ensure that colleagues in subject specific classes are supported rather than given further work to do in order to run an inclusive classroom. Helping students to use technology to 'keep-up' when learning in a second language empowers the student and enables the teacher to teach effectively and at pace. I look forward to meeting you at the conference and I am always interested to hear what is going on in other classrooms and schools. See you in Potsdam!
