AGIS Conference 2026 Potsdam
Working Together To Support Learning
Sunday September 20, 2026 9:00am - 11:30am CEST
This session is for members of the AGIS Elementary Literacy working group as well as for primary school staff teaching literacy. Together, we will share best practices and explore ways to foster student literacy skills in meaningful and engaging ways.
Imagine a classroom where students confidently take charge of their learning, make choices, and dive into reading and writing with curiosity and purpose. Fostering agency and autonomy in literacy units means giving students the skills, confidence, and choice to take ownership of their learning. When learners feel empowered, they are more motivated, curious, and capable of tackling complex texts and writing tasks on their own. This session will explore practical strategies for promoting student independence in reading and writing and become active participants in their literacy journey. We will look at:
- Designing literacy activities that encourage decision-making and self-expression.
- Scaffolding reading and writing tasks to gradually release responsibility to students.
- Fostering critical thinking, reflection, and goal-setting in literacy learning.
- Building a classroom culture of independent readers and writers.
By the end of the session, we will have examined literacy units and strategies to cultivate lifelong learners who navigate texts, express ideas, and take ownership of their growth with confidence.

This session starts at 9:00 am and finishes at 11:30 am.
